Seattle Dharma Punx
Against the Stream

Seattle Dharma Punx is a self-led meditation group located in Seattle, Washington, US. We offer a casual space to meditate in community, explore Buddhist teachings, and share personal experience.
The name Dharma Punx, coined by author and Buddhist teacher Noah Levine, stands for an international crew of counterculture individuals willing to look within their own hearts and minds for a path through the fear and confusion that comes with being human. Wisdom, compassion, kindness, and generosity - aka freedom- is the alternative and we all have the ability to attain it.
Buddha was a revolutionary. His practice was subversive; his message, seditious. His enlightened point of view went against the norms of his day - in his words, "against the stream". His teachings changed the world, and they can change you too.

Weekly Meditation
We meet every Sunday evening from 7 to 8:30pm in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. Seattle DPx is donation-based, and open to everyone regardless of tradition or level of experience. All are welcome. Bring yourself. Bring a cushion. Bring a friend full of greed, hatred, and delusion.
Dharma Schedule
In addition to a 40 minute group meditation every week, we take time before or after the sit for open discussion and dharma talks. This winter we completed a group discussion series based on audio talks by Gil Fronsdal.
Starting March, 2009, we're studying the 4 Foundations of Mindfulness. The four foundations come from the Satipatthana Sutta of the Pali Canon and are the basis of the Buddha's teachings on mindfulness practice. Over the course of eight weeks we'll explore these teachings and cultivate a direct relationship with and awareness of the body, feelings, mind, and Dharmas as the foundations of our meditation practice.
March 15th: Dharma talk, First Foundation of Mindfulness ~ mindfulness of body
March 22nd: Review & discussion, mindfulness of body
March 29th: Dharma talk, Second Foundation of Mindfulness ~ mindfulness of feelings
April 5th: Review & discussion, mindfulness of feelings
April 12th: Third foundation of mindfulness ~ mindfulness of mind
April 19th: Review & discussion, mindfulness of mind
April 26th: Fourth foundation of mindfulness ~ mindfulness of Dharmas
May 3rd: Review & discussion, mindfulness of Dharmas
If you'd like to explore these teachings further, Noah Levine gives an overview and sample meditations in his book, Against the Stream. You're also welcome to contact Rachel at seattledpx at gmail.com and she can provide recommendations for further study.
Audio dharma, outside study, group review/discussions and additional reading are never a requirement for joining us- we welcome your participation at whatever level you feel most comfortable.
